Visiting Angkor Wat is a dream for many travellers, but for families with accessibility needs, planning the experience can feel uncertain.

Recently, we helped a family visiting Siem Reap explore Angkor Wat and the surrounding temples with a fully adapted, wheelchair-friendly approach. With the right planning, local knowledge, and support on the ground, what could have been a challenge became a smooth and unforgettable experience.

A Real Family Experience at Angkor Wat

As a family of four, including one adult using a manual wheelchair full-time, they arrived in Siem Reap excited to explore but unsure how accessible the temples would be.

Angkor Wat is vast, with uneven surfaces and long walking distances, which can make visiting difficult without the right support.

How We Made the Tour Wheelchair-Friendly

To ensure a comfortable experience, we carefully planned every part of the visit:

  • Private vehicle with special permission to access exclusive areas optimal for viewing the temples and for convenient wheelchair access

  • Experienced driver coordinating each stop efficiently and acting as an assistant

  • Licensed local guide to assist throughout

  • Flexible pacing over two days

  • Carefully selected temple route to minimise difficult terrain

  • Sunrise visit timed for a quieter, more comfortable experience

  • Local lunch in a village setting for a relaxed break

Every detail was designed to reduce stress and maximise enjoyment.

Exploring Angkor Wat, Bayon and Ta Prohm

Over two days, the family visited:

  • Angkor Wat

  • Bayon Temple

  • Ta Prohm

One of the most memorable moments was an early sunrise visit that coincided with the equinox. Watching the first light illuminate the temples created a truly special experience.

By coordinating vehicle access and timing carefully, we were able to significantly reduce walking distances and make each location manageable.

What They Said

As a family of four (three adults and one adventurous toddler), with one adult using a manual wheelchair for mobility, travelling the world to uncover its accessibility can often be a challenge. When we arrived in Siem Reap, Cambodia, we were eager to explore the iconic Angkor Wat and its surrounding temples but needed a tour company that could accommodate our unique needs. Enter Connect Cambodia – a team that turned what could have been a logistical challenge into an unforgettable adventure. From the moment we contacted them, it was clear that Connect Cambodia was not just about providing tours – they were about creating experiences. Over two incredible days, we explored Angkor Wat, Bayon Temple, and Ta Prohm, with a delicious lunch in a local village that gave us a taste of authentic Cambodian hospitality. What truly stood out was the thoughtfulness and care of our guide, Vantey, and our driver. They ensured we had full access to the temple grounds, driving us as close as possible to the temples so that we didn’t have to navigate long distances. This level of consideration made all the difference for our family, especially for our wheelchair user, who cannot walk at all. One of the highlights of our trip was an early morning sunrise visit to the temples, which serendipitously coincided with the equinox. Watching the first rays of sunlight illuminate the ancient structures was nothing short of magical – a moment we will treasure forever. Throughout both days, nothing was ever too much trouble for the Connect Cambodia team. Their warmth, professionalism, and genuine desire to make our experience special shone through in every detail. They not only made the temples accessible but also made us feel welcome, cared for, and completely at ease. For any family, especially those navigating accessibility challenges, we cannot recommend Connect Cambodia enough. They turned our dream of exploring Angkor Wat into a reality, and for that, we are endlessly grateful. Thank you, Geoff, Vantey and the entire Connect Cambodia team, for giving us memories that will last a lifetime.

Is Angkor Wat Accessible?

Angkor Wat is not fully wheelchair accessible by default. Distances between areas can be large, and surfaces are often uneven.

However, with the right planning:

  • Vehicles can be positioned close to key entrances

  • Routes can be adapted to suit mobility needs

  • Visits can be timed to avoid crowds and heat

  • Support can be arranged where needed

This makes a significant difference to the overall experience.
